映画
『地上より永遠に』で1953年にアカデミー賞助演男優賞を獲得した他、『踊る大紐育』や『上流社会』、『脱走特急』などの多くの作品に主役、準主役級で出演した。中でもオットー・プレミンジャー監督作品『黄金の腕』で演じた麻薬中毒に苦しむ博打うちのドラマー役は鬼気迫る名演として評価されている。『錨を上げて』、『踊る大紐育』、『上流社会』、『抱擁』などの劇中で歌唱したナンバーは名曲が多く、後世までスタンダードとなった歌も少なくない。しかし一方で、中年期以降に主演した映画には、質的に他愛ない水準の作品もまま見られ、B級女優を相手に配してワンマン的大名演技を見せるだけの例も少なくなかった。知名度の高さから『八十日間世界一周』や『キャノンボール2』などのカメオ出演でも活躍したが、特に1965年の『オスカー』では、ラストシーンでの一瞬の登場だけで全てをひっくり返すどんでん返しの役割を演じて秀逸であった。
